Dr. Kerner and Dr. Alafoginis met as members of the California Psychological Association’s Ethics Committee, where they provided consultation on cases within the bounds of professional psychological practice. Dr. Kerner has been a professional member for several years, and Dr. Alafoginis was a student member from 2021-2022. The goal of the Ethics Committee is to serve as a consultation service for the psychological community in California. Psychologists and mental health professionals call-in and provide the committee with an ethical concern, and the committee members walk the caller through an evidence-based ethical decision-making model to result in next steps.

Dr. Michael Kerner is a Consultant, Author, and Educator. He is on the Board of Directors at Palo Alto University; author of materials for AATBS Law & Ethics; author of examination workbooks for CPSE California, and a primary author of preparatory materials for MFT and Psychology licensure. Dr. Kerner is a consultant and conducts Fitness for Duty Evaluations to San Jose, Salinas, Monterey, and Greenfield Police Departments. He was also an instructor to the San Jose Police Department CIT Academy for five years. Dr. Kerner won the Forensic Psychologist of the Year award from the Santa Clara County Psychological Association, an award voted on by more than 300 peers.

Dr. Alafoginis is a professor, researcher, forensic evaluator, and consultant. She has worked in state and federal prisons and jails around the country, and is currently completing her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Maine. She is a member of a threat assessment consultation group run by the Boston and Maine FBI offices, that consults with regional contacts on potential future violence, and was responsible for helping write the handbook for this organization. Her research interests include the intersection of ethics, criminal thinking, and illegal behavior. She has researched assessments and psychometrics, and is currently conducting research for the state of Maine regarding the application of test instruments to forensic cases. Her threat assessment area of specialization is conducting evaluations with people who have been convicted of domestic terrorism.
